Anyone have thoughts on DG's expansion efforts?
I've kept an eye on popshelf's locations, and it appears they are actually down in store count so far this fiscal year. I have them ending FY2023 with 239 locations, and the current count at 225 (-14). My understanding is that a significant portion of this drop constitutes conversions from popshelf to DG stores, e.g.,:
https://www.tonetoatl.com/2024/04/Popshelf-Closing...I don't have an official release, but I've seen mention online by an employee that there were 13 PS -> DG conversions slated for this year.
In the most recent quarter, the company stated they would be adding 30 popshelf stores, so I'm not sure if the decline marks a departure from that goal or not.
Note: some states (eg, Illinois, Indiana) have seen increases, not decreases, in popshelf stores, if we're looking for evidence that they're not about to 'shelve' the whole concept. A lot of the decline has come in states with several stores, and who were the first to receive the stores -- North Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia.
Another item of concern is Mexico's slow growth. I see 3 stores to date:
https://www.misuperdollargeneral.com/I believe the plan is to add 15 stores in Mexico this year (wasn't it supposed to be 10 by end of last year?), and one or two of the three were present last year. But I've seen very little on the business results of these initial forays into Mexico. Wondering if anyone has some insight.
