(Some kind of outrageous weirdo policy is announced)

Then you hear from democrats and the media:

1. That's a lie - we're not doing anything of the sort!
2. Why is the right opening up a new front in the culture war???
3. You know, it's actually a really good idea if we totally banned the thing that we're claiming we're not going to ban
4. Proceed to ban it

For gas stoves, we're on stage 3.
