and have come to find the news feeds I get on line to be simple confirmation bias tools based on the little widget behind the scenes that just sends you more of the same that you just read.
I subscribe be to Apple News, which provides a broad swath of media, all sides from far right to far left and mostly the stuff in between. If they’re algorithming me I haven’t noticed it. My favorite part is that I get tons of stuff that’s behind paywalls, and rarely but occasionally I get a splash screen saying ‘Please subscribe” but that goes away and I get the pay walled content from sources I’m not going to pay a full price for because I don’t care that much.
Even better, I can often find a story via Google News or Facebook or here or there which leads me to a paywall, but I can easily get it via Apple News without the wall. There is a search function - and tons of stuff that isn’t featured up front is waiting for you down in the stack files of the servers.
It’s what Google News used to be before everybody started erecting “keep out” signs, and the depth is quite excellent. You can get a lot of the content free anyway; they serve it up free as a come on. If you want it all, yes, you have to pay Apple for the privilege. Oh well. At least some of the money ends up back at the publishers.
