Dollar Tree stock was falling sharply Wednesday as the discount retailer’s fourth-quarter earnings and first-quarter outlook disappointed as shoppers spent less in stores.

Dollar Tree also said it plans to close 600 Family Dollar locations in the first half of the year following a review of store performances and current market conditions.

The retailer added it will close an additional 370 Family Dollar and 30 Dollar Tree stores over the next several years at the end of each store’s current lease term. These closures come as the company completes a store portfolio review, which led to a $594.4 million charge in the fourth quarter.

Same-store sales for both Dollar Tree and Family Dollar increased 3% in the fourth quarter, which beat estimates of 2.8%. However, Family Dollar same-store sales alone dropped 1.2% for the quarter, wider than the 0.5% decline analysts expected. Dollar Tree said that while traffic increased from the prior year for both of its brands, average ticket—the amount spent in store per customer—declined.
