As ges said, the mid-terms may provide a check on the Executive. Right now, Congress is abrogating that responsibility. If we turn Congress blue in two years, there will be some push-back. If not, we may have no choices in 2028. Maybe a "show" election, but nothing that actually counts.

In terms of outside interference, unless things change dramatically, most systems are not online. They are electronic, but "air-gapped". So you would have to be on-site to tamper with the machines directly. However, that doesn't stop hostile agents from planting false stories on FB, or X, or feeding them through less reputable "news" outlets. I'm not sure if anyone has quantified this, but I'm pretty sure that helped swing the election in 2016.
