The week's question
In December 2024, in the thread "Re: BRK: Why Not XOM?", BreckHutHigh asked the members: "What about the long road trips with kids?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

I am absolutely content as long as fortress Berkshire

- longterm provides a modest return, say >=5% after inflation

Yeah me too! I do think there is a difference between LT Berkshire shareholders (like us) and newcomers or folks thinking about buying Berkshire stock now. We LT owners have deferred taxes working for us (I think of it as my own "float"), so the stock & business doesn't need to perform miracles for us going forward because we are getting that extra juice from our "float", i.e., we get to keep the returns on the deferred taxes. Plus we sleep well at night because we know that the risk of permanent loss of capital is as close to 0 as any other company in the universe.

It's a different equation for newcomers. It is quite possible they have better opportunities elsewhere.
