it even sounds like albaby is now saying CAN damage rather than WILL damage.

I never thought otherwise. Musk could always have chosen not to do anything at all. He clearly chose otherwise.

He's already caused some pain for Trump by providing a lot of cover for Senators and some of the fiscal conservatives in the House to make passing the OBBB much more difficult. That makes a delay in passage far more likely, putting the July 4th goal in serious doubt....and thus extending the amount of time that ICE lacks funds relative to Trump's aspirations for it.

Both men could still choose to deescalate. What Trump can't do is cause "real damage" to Musk (to borrow your terms) without running the risk of real damage back to himself, because Musk is one of the few people who can inflict some serious damage on Trump.
