A $12.5 Billion Federal Hunt for Americans Who Hate Fascism

A federal court imposed extremely severe sentences under statutes that operate in every state. The drive to imprison those who oppose fascism is broadening, and Texas marked the first ground where the charges took root.

FBI Director Kash Patel has pledged to expand the federal pursuit of anti-fascists, vowing to keep “identifying, locating, and dismantling” the movement and its funding networks. Federal agents have already traced antifa money through tax-exempt nonprofits and foreign donors. The recent Prairieland sentences in Texas reveal what this effort produces: ordinary Americans facing decades in federal prison

This pursuit operates retroactively and prospectively. A Bondi order, continued by Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, directs the FBI to mine five years of intelligence on antifa and the left. Some 200 task forces and 4,000 personnel run the program, funded by a tip-line bounty that pays Americans to inform on one another. Trump’s 2027 budget seeks a $12.5 billion FBI and an NSPM-7 Joint Mission Center across ten agencies. A years-old rally, an archived chat, or a prior donation can open a case.

Trump designated antifa a domestic terrorist group on September 22, 2025, and NSPM-7 brands anti-Americanism, anti-capitalism, and anti-Christianity as indicators of violence. He named George Soros a target without evidence, though Soros survived the Holocaust as a child in Nazi-occupied Hungary.

The label these orders attack means less than they suggest. Antifa shortens “anti-fascist,” and the dictionary names a belief, not a crime. Fascism is a far-right system of dictatorial power, suppressed opposition, and aggressive nationalism, and a fascist supports that power and the silencing of dissent.

The opposite belief reaches across the spectrum. The anti-fascist label spans socialists, anarchists, liberals, and ordinary citizens who reject authoritarian rule, describing a loose, decentralized set of beliefs that lacks any central group, leaders, or membership rolls.

Millions of ordinary Americans own political books, print homemade flyers, and send encrypted messages on Signal. A federal court in Texas recently treated each of those commonplace acts as evidence of terrorism. The June 14, 2025 No Kings protests filled roughly 2,100 sites nationwide, and identical statutes reach marchers in all fifty states.

The government's case against Daniel Sanchez-Estrada rested on political reading and a marriage: a box of poems and pamphlets (zines), encrypted messages, his wife's arrest. Each element sits in countless American homes, yet prosecutors recast the inventory as conspiracy membership. Sanchez-Estrada skipped the July 4, 2025 protest near Alvarado, Texas, and prosecutors alleged no weapon, no property damage, no confrontation. A jury still convicted him of concealing a document, and Judge Reed O'Connor sentenced him to thirty years.
