Question quoted at the end of the "Investing Basics" guide:
Advertising is engineered to keep you spending everything you earn - outsourcing your dopamine to marketing strategists. What did advertising once sell you that you did not need - and when did you notice?
It's hard to admit to what one was sold that was not needed, because we tend to think of ourselves as immune to advertising - which is plainly not true, as nearly everyone holds that view yet adverting really, really works.
I don't have many pocessions though.. a laptop, a piano, a road bicycle, and that is about it. I don't have a car.. fly economy always, so the answer is probably other things easy to miss, such as .. long pause .. I know, it is when the waiter asks "Would you like a desert" and I know I absolutely don't need it, but say yes anyway partly to be polite, and partly because of the dopemine brainwashing.
Does one believe that is not advertising? It isn't obvious, but it actually is, because advertising is not just the particular product being advertising but the industry framing of waht is considered normal. It's normal to drink alchol with your meal, etc, that is framed by years upon years of messages, images, etc, which brainwshes us into particular habbits that produce profits.
Ok, I had to stetch to find that, and 100% there are other things I'm buying that I don't need, but not aware, and actually that is the point of the article. We don't know what we don't know.
