The week's question
In December 2024, in the thread "Re: BRK: Why Not XOM?", BreckHutHigh asked the members: "What about the long road trips with kids?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

So Trump won over his supporters by educating them?

No. He won them over by pandering to their basest instincts. Telling them what they want to hear, not the truth. They want to hear that all of their problems are someone else's fault. Black, Hispanics, immigrants, uppity women, gays, Jews, Muslims, big cities, Democrats ... pick your group. Oppressing others is not the way to solve your problems.

Are Democrats this idealistic that they would rather lose power and endanger democracy than take the low road and fight fire with fire?

If you mean fight lies with different lies, no. That's not the way. There is a thing called morals and standards. Losing your self respect is too high a price to pay just to win an election. At least for some people.

It doesn't feel like Democrats are fighting hard for the survival of democracy ...

Yep. Like herding cats. It makes me angry that they'd rather fight over dumping an imperfect candidate at the last minute instead of rallying behind the candidate that has won the most votes in the primaries. Or at a bare minimum, point out all of the problems with the opposing candidate instead of pointing out all of the problems with their own candidate. It's a circular firing squad, ferchrissake. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

But even dumber is believing or even defending the long string lies told by one of the most immoral men on the planet.

All I care about is what the next president is going to do for my safety and my pocketbook. And Trump has a much rosier future painted for me

Be careful of the price you are willing to pay for your safety. Authoritarians can create very safe streets, but at the price of your own freedom. And your pocketbook? You can count on Trump picking your pocket to enrich himself and his friends. He has consistently done that his entire life. Why would that change just because he is the president?

I'm sure you don't believe me now, but give Trump and the Republican Project 2025 a shot and in 4 years you'll be wishing you listened to the education that was there for the taking in 2024.
