Óscar Arias Sánchez, the Nobel laureate -- who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1987 for brokering a plan to end the civil wars in Central America -- and former Costa Rican president, said on Tuesday that he received a brief email informing him the United States had revoked his visa.

No explanation was provided.

Arias has been critical of the Trump administration comparing Trump to “a Roman emperor, telling the rest of the world what to do."

Arias -- who was president of Costa Rica from 1986 to 1990 and from 2006 to 2010, is one of the country’s senior statesmen and runs a foundation that promotes peace and democracy -- said: “If someone wants to punish me in the hopes of silencing me, that isn’t going to work.”
