Replying to myself, it's remarkable that such a collection of talent managed to get together. A musician I know said that Ringo was one of the best because he was like a metronome in maintaining the beat. George, John, and Paul were all gifted songwriters, and very competent on their instruments (though none were regarded as "the best" like, say, Clapton was). And they all came together in a single band.
