We old phartz remember how popular "Roots" was, as a book, and TV miniseries. Now, 50 years after it's publication, a school district had decided it is inappropriate. Apparently, the school district is pointing at Chapter 84, which is about a slave being raped by her white owner.
from the net sifter:
Chapter 84 of Alex Haley’s Roots details the arrival of Kunta Kinte's daughter, Kizzy, at the small, impoverished plantation of her new owner, Tom Lea. Shortly after arriving, Kizzy is brutally raped by Lea. Afterward, she meets another enslaved woman, Miss Malizy, who reveals her own history of abuse and introduces Kizzy to the other slaves. That part was in the miniseries too. The offspring of that rape was "Chicken George".
Tennessee school district bans Alex Haley’s Roots under 2022 state law
A Tennessee school district has banned Roots, the author Alex Haley’s groundbreaking novel and one of the most renowned and influential works about the horrors of the transatlantic slave trade.
Knox county schools (KCS) took that step under a state law that has disappeared hundreds of titles from school libraries and alarmed advocates of free expression.https://currently.att.yahoo.com/news/articles/tenn...Nah, no signs of the US morphing into an authoritarian state. Our "leaders and statesmen" now tell us how beneficial slavery was, for the slaves.
