The week's question
In December 2024, in the thread "Re: BRK: Why Not XOM?", BreckHutHigh asked the members: "What about the long road trips with kids?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

Rayvt:

Remove the "AI" word and it has been true for quite some time.

As far back as 1986 when CBS "60 Minutes" did a fake report on the Audi 5000.
And Dateline NBC in 1992 fake of exploding gas tanks in GM pickups.
And the CBS "60 Minutes" Dan Rather fake document about G. Bush in 2004.

Fake videos and pictures and photoshopped documents have been rife on the internet since the internet was created.

Uh, for the record, * NBC retracted and apologized for the staging of the GM gas tanks story.

* Dan Rather lost his job over the George Bush story, although he maintains that the evidence still supports his conclusion.

* The “60 Minutes” story was not retracted, although (much) later studies showed that most (note all) instances were driver induced, but Audi still designed and installed a protection device (which has become standard among most manufacturers). CBS was widely criticized for using doctored footage to demonstrate the issue without disclosing that to the audience. The issue was real, the cause was varied, and controversial.

So, 2 of your 3 examples were corrected, the other is in dispute but led to a correction adopted by the entire industry. Good show.

You might recall the original statement was “A very high percentage of news and other info…” and you have provided 3 examples, 2 of which were corrected, out of the hundreds of thousands of examples available from just the past 12 months, and you reached back 25 years to find them.

Again, good show. You’re comparing the Not Perfect Press to AI hallucinations, scraping, and social media. Good sense of proportion, there.

Bbmd:

I would think that once a fake YouTube video get millions of viewers, and (I am assuming) thousands of viewers comment how this is a cheap fake, YouTube would be morally obligated to take it down. But they don't.

Never count on someone to do the right thing when their paycheck requires them to do the other thing.
