The week's question
In December 2024, in the thread "Re: BRK: Why Not XOM?", BreckHutHigh asked the members: "What about the long road trips with kids?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

New Member of Trump’s Iran Negotiating Team Comes From Notoriously Pro-Israel Think Tank

Amid stalled peace talks and a US blockade on Iranian ports, the Trump administration has added a new member to its negotiating team who comes from the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies, a notoriously hawkish think tank that has been lobbying for aggressive action against the Islamic Republic for many years.

Nick Stewart, the head of the FDD’s lobbying arm, has joined the office of US envoy Steve Witkoff, journalist Alex Marquardt first reported on his Substack on Friday. The White House confirmed the appointment to Marquardt, calling Stewart a “sharp, seasoned policy expert who is a valuable asset to Special Envoy Steve Witkoff’s talented team.”

What is the FDD, the pro-Israel think tank shaping Trump’s Iran policy?

The organisation, which had fiercely opposed the 2015 nuclear deal, occupies a carefully cultivated position in the corridors of power in Washington, DC.

Its experts appear across major US news networks, often introduced as nonpartisan analysts. Its reports circulate through the US Congress and White House.

But behind that image sits a network of former Israeli military and intelligence officials who have spent years pushing the US towards confrontation with Iran.

Kushner and Witkoff are Israeli assets. Kushner has known "Bibi" since he was a kid. Stewart is an even more stridently Zionist Israeli asset. In my B-school days, we would call building a "peace" negotiating team with people who, stridently, do NOT want "peace" with Iran, would be called "setting it up to fail".

Yet, the Wall Street crowd cheers every time Trump the Conqueror, says peace is at hand, in spite of Trump stacking the deck to ensure negotiations would *not* be in good faith, and *not* willing to compromise on anything substantive.
