The week's question
In December 2024, in the thread "Re: BRK: Why Not XOM?", BreckHutHigh asked the members: "What about the long road trips with kids?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

I don't know that "poorly educated" is all that weird a term, either.

I think it's a very weird term for a politician to use, especially in the sentence, "I love the poorly education." The oddness isn't really the word “love.” Again, politicians routinely say things like “I love working people,” “I love farmers,” or “I love the people of this state.” The unusual part is exactly “the poorly educated” part. It turns an educational disadvantage into the noun identifying the people.

And “poorly educated” normally describes a condition, not an identity. We might say someone is poorly educated, but “the poorly educated” has a somewhat clinical or hierarchical sound - like “the poor,” “the ignorant,” or “the disadvantaged” and creates an ambiguity about what exactly is being celebrated. Does he mean something like “I love people who have been poorly served by the educational system” (a somewhat sympathetic interpretation) or “I love my poorly educated supporters”? In other words, does trump love them despite their lack of education or simply because they support him? From everything we know about him and his actions, it's the latter.

Pete
