That's hyperbole
Sadly, it isn't. "It can't happen here"is on the list of "famous last words".
There were a few reasons that didn't happen before 2020, but one is that our system was more resilient. It creaked and groaned, but we made it through. Then the fascist-leaning folks voted him in again. This time the DOJ, FBI, DOD, and more have been corrupted. The pillars that stood in opposition to authoritarianism are corrupted, doing the bidding of the dictator-wannabe. He wants POTUS for life. I think he isn't smart enough to pull it off, but he has done a lot of the ground work already.
One demagogue is all it takes. The Weimar is the obvious example, but there have been others. Putin, for example.
