The week's question
In December 2024, in the thread "Re: BRK: Why Not XOM?", BreckHutHigh asked the members: "What about the long road trips with kids?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

The timing could not be more perfect, from Trump's perspective. Validates what he was barking about.

‘Shocking and outrageous’ N.J. voting revelation leads to calls for independent probe

New Jersey was thrown headlong into the tense national debate over the integrity of elections Tuesday when Gov. Mikie Sherrill announced that roughly 6,600 noncitizens in the state were mistakenly registered to vote and fewer than 400 ultimately cast ballots.

Sherrill, a first-year Democrat, said the issue was because of a computer glitch in the state Department of Motor Vehicles' automatic voter registration system that happened under her Democratic predecessor Gov. Phil Murphy, three years before she took office.

currently.att.yahoo.com - Republicans furious over noncitizens voting

There will, undoubtedly, be a philosophical debate about jumping 200M US citizens through the hoops, and, maybe, preventing a Million, or more, citizens voting, to prevent thousands, or tens of thousands, of non-citizens being registered. Trump will certainly run this up the flagpole, then add two or three extensions to the pole.

Here in Michigan, registering to vote is a matter of checking a box on a driver's license application or renewal form. If you walk in to a SoS office, and are not registered, the clerk will ask you if you want to register. In Michigan, SoS handles both issuing driver's licenses and maintains the voter registration rolls, so all the information, except citizenship, is in one place. Probably a major share of registered voters in Michigan have never presented proof of citizenship. Supposedly, when I upgraded to a "real ID" license, 8 years ago, the SoS office scanned my birth certificate. They did not scan it when I upgraded to an "Enhanced" license a couple weeks ago. If the SoS has not kept scans of US birth certificates or passports, I foresee an epic mob scene at SoS offices and/or city clerk offices, between now and November.

I was warning people on the Fool, for years, to get their papers in order.

Steve
