The week's question
In December 2024, in the thread "Re: BRK: Why Not XOM?", BreckHutHigh asked the members: "What about the long road trips with kids?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

And I would say that your 90 year old has gone over 70 years without buying cold medicine, flying, or doing anything else on the list.

You don't need proof of citizenship to do any of that. Just photo id. It's much more onerous to have to go out and find your proof of citizenship than just pull out any identification. That's why your original list isn't really appropriate. It seems like you're confusing the SAVE Act (which requires proof of citizenship) with other different proposals that require photo id in the polling place.

Which is a big reason why the SAVE Act doesn't have enough votes to get even a majority in the Senate, much less a supermajority. That specific piece of legislation will be much more burdensome on voters than even an ordinary photo id requirement, because it focuses a lot on providing documentary proof of citizenship (DPOC) in person at time of registration, which is much more challenging for a lot of people. Especially in rural areas and for people who have changed their name. You don't need DPOC to adopt a pet or buy cigarettes, but you would need it to be able to vote under the SAVE Act.
