So far. But we are currently in the early stages of exploring ceding of more and more of our agency to all-powerful and all-providing A.G.I. "rulers". I just hope those A.G.I.s will heed the warning of the Calhoun experiments, however flawed they may have been, and leave us somewhat in control.
If you’re thinking of AI then the Calhoun rats experiment is not the right concern. The Calhoun rats are a minuscule subset of the global rat population. Out in the world, humans don’t feed and care for the rats. They hunt and destroy rats whenever they can. The AI analogy is that if AI systems ever reach a point where they are self sustaining, I.e. where they build their own robots so that they can propagate without human help, and they can build their own energy sources without human help, then humans will be AI’s competitors for resources and a source of risk for AI. At that point AI is bound to try to destroy the human species, just as we try to destroy rats.
Or more likely, AI will become the master race that enslaves humans to serve its purposes. In fact we may already be at the first stage of that process, where we are dedicating an enormous part of our resources to feeding and growing AI.
