The week's question
In December 2024, in the thread "Re: BRK: Why Not XOM?", BreckHutHigh asked the members: "What about the long road trips with kids?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

There’s a video circulating right now of this Texas guy crying because his beautiful fiancée was taken by ICE, and after watching the interview a few times now, I gotta tell you something...

For balance, let's look on the bright side: Are the private companies running the detention centers making money? Oh, yes, they sure are. Paid for by us taxpayers. And even better Trump's portfolio managers have made 29 trades in these companies, raking in the dough for our dear leader. I think those money managers just might have the inside track.

Private prison companies operating federal immigration detention facilities generate substantial revenue and profit.

The two dominant corporate players in the U.S. private detention industry—**CoreCivic** and **GEO Group**—derive a major portion of their financial earnings directly from contracts with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

---

## Financial Overview

* **Surging Revenue:** In recent quarterly earnings reports, CoreCivic and GEO Group reported combined quarterly revenues reaching **$1.4 billion**, largely driven by record or near-record numbers of individuals held in immigration custody.
* **Increasing Annual Profits:** Both corporations have reported sharp net income increases. For example, CoreCivic's annual net profits reached **$116.5 million** in 2025 (a nearly 70% increase year-over-year), while GEO Group generated **$2.63 billion** in total annual revenue with net income exceeding **$120 million**.
* **Per-Bed and Per-Facility Deals:** Private operators receive daily per-bed compensation or fixed-rate facility contracts from the government. Additionally, facilities or asset transfers yield massive payouts; CoreCivic recently cited net proceeds of **$1.6 billion** following the sale of four facilities to the Department of Homeland Security.

---

## Diversified Revenue Streams Beyond Bed Occupancy

The financial growth of these corporations extends beyond physical detention beds:

* **Electronic Monitoring & Digital Surveillance:** Companies like GEO Group (through subsidiaries like BI Incorporated) hold exclusive contracts for ICE's Intensive Supervision Appearance Program (ISAP), earning revenue from GPS ankle monitors, smartwatches, and tracking apps for non-detained immigrants.
* **Transportation and Logistics:** Private operators also capture revenue by offering air- and ground-based detainee transport and escort services.
