The navy is considering renaming the aircraft carrier USS Doris Miller.
Doris Miller, a black ship’s cook, distinguished himself on December 7th after taking over a machine gun after the gunner was killed, adding his stram of 50 caliber bullets to the defense of the battleships at anchor off Ford Island in Pearl Harbor.
He was awarded the Navy Cross for his actions. Unfortunately, he died some months later when the ship to which he was reassigned was sunk in the South Pacific.
“USS Doris Miller” was the name being considered for the 4th carrier to be built in the Gerald Ford class of carriers- which is still probably years away from commissioning.
The navy is considering renaming it the USS Donald Trump.
I believe the operative word in that sentence is “considering”.
The day after Trump is no longer president, I imagine it will be back to the USS Doris Miller.
It’s just a shame that so much in this administration is driven by catering to Trump’s fragile ego.
