I don't know about all that. All I know is what happened when my wife filed for Social Security, which was well after I filed. Her lifetime income was, of course, less than mine, what with her taking a few years out of the workforce to raise our kids.
My SS was $X. I was expecting her to get $X/2. Half of what mine was.
She got a letter from the SSA explaining her benefit:
* For your lifetime SS earnings, your benefit is $Z. (Which was about 1/3 of mine.)
* In addition, your benefit is topped up by the difference between $X/2 and $Z.
* So you get your SS benefit of $Z plus a portion of your husband's benefit.
