Haughty White Racist 401K Liberals do *not* want Americans, especially poorer or black Americans to have a CHOICE where they can send their kids to school.
Probably deserves its own thread. But I'll respond briefly, and am more than happy to chat about it further later (if you want).
I am totally against vouchers, or similar programs. The public education system was one of the best ideas we ever had, and it worked remarkably well for half a century. It wasn't perfect, but no system would be. Sure, one perk of wealth is that you can pay for private schools. Poorer people (black or non-black) wouldn't have that option. I certainly didn't when I was young (I was one of the original "latch-key" kids, divorced mom struggling to put food on the table, etc). But the vouchers take away funding from schools, making it more difficult for them to succeed (or even keep up with basics like facilities). Further, most of those voucher schools pick and choose whom they accept, while public schools have to accept everyone no matter what issues they may have (e.g. behavioral, special needs, etc). Which then allows them to tout "higher performance" because they preselected their student population to maximize that metric.
And don't get me started on religious schools that teach stultifying nonsense in place of science and history.
