The week's question
In December 2024, in the thread "Re: BRK: Why Not XOM?", BreckHutHigh asked the members: "What about the long road trips with kids?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

So we had a lightning strike near the house a couple weeks ago, and it took out my TiVo and my ability to watch any of my usual channels. Xfinity “no longer supports” cable cards (want me to transition to their box, which will never happen) and TiVo is out of business (but maintaining current customers) so I’m a little bit stuck. Anyway, I have found Tubi, a service (I later found out) owned by Murdoch, but sometimes you’re desperate, right?

Anyway, loads of content, ad supported and not skippable, but (say it with me) sometimes you’re desperate.

And they have lots and lots of shows on Egypt, the Universe, the Solar System, other science stuff, forensic crimes shows and more, so I’m entertained, at least for a while. My smart TV brings it right in.

Mostly it’s been pretty good, if old and repurposed from Australia TV, Japan TV, or rerun to death on US cable, but it’s something . Well, I watched one show on the “Origins of Life”, and it’s going on and on about the mathematical chances of molecules organizing into something meaningful, a bazillion times this and two bazillion times that, and allo the grains of sand on the beach and so on, and after I’m in about 30-45 minutes I realize it’s a creationist crap but well produced and complete with interviews from scientists and thinkers and philosophers who end up concluding that (paraphrase) since we’ve decided from the start that we need a scientific explanation, we’ve ruled out the other possibilities like “higher intelligence” and “alternate explanations” and, well, at that point “click”.

Yeah, I want science in my science shows. It seemed a reasonable program but I got the drift that they were leading me down this path about 10 minutes before I said “Oh, creationist crap”. They tried to sneak it in. I’m sure it works for some.
