Apparently, a thing is worth what one person is willing to pay for it. For example:

From my own non-scientific observations, New Hampshire appears to be the state where vanity plates are the most widespread. I thought that might be because they are free, but that's not why:

Either way, "Live free or die" is a really strong state motto.
