The damage is done, and it will persist for decades.

I think that the US will keep much of its existing (older) science and engineering talent, due to inertia. People who are settled in their lives often don't like to move.

But the influx of the world's most talented scientists and engineers to the US has ended. This may be permanent, since we are no longer trusted to welcome foreigers beyond the next election.

The US is also cutting investment in its home-grown science, engineering and education, which is pushing our own talented youth out.

I think the US is committing economic suicide.
