What is the implication behind repeating Trump's line about the poorly educated as if it were a negative thing to say? Do the poorly educated not deserve to be 'loved' - or respected or have their needs addressed?

Nobody is arguing that poorly educated people don't deserve love or respect. That's a bit of a straw man adjacent argument. The criticism is about whether calling them “the poorly educated” and celebrating their support is patronizing or politically instrumental. A politician normally (back in the good 'ol days pre-trump) says, or used to say, things like “I appreciate working-class voters”, “I'm proud to have their support”, “people without college degrees have been ignored” and “I want to represent people who feel left behind.”

“I love the poorly educated” is unusual because it defines a huge group of people primarily by a deficiency: what they lack educationally. trump's statement can be interpreted charitably as an expression of solidarity with people who lack formal education, but the wording is sufficiently strange that it's also reasonable to question what exactly he meant.
