Years ago, we environmentalists used to dream of gas hitting $5 a gallon as the tipping point that would dramatically lower consumption and reduce Americans’ dependence on cars - or at least spur the adoption of EVs. It was considered politically impossible and economically unimaginable. But under the current administration’s policies, we’re almost there. Of course, the tipping point is probably higher now.
