That's why "commie" is such an effective way of communicating to working-class voters that they shouldn't vote for Democrats, and especially not democratic socialists.
I searched for one demographic in the linked study that I couldn't find: age group. It goes through working class, race, education, but no age. I wonder how big a deal 'commie' is for the under 40 group? I know it still has resonance for the over 50 folks, but I'm not sure it has the same effect on younger voters.
Another irony of all this is that the trump administration is perhaps the most commie we've had in government buying of major stakes in large corporations.
