The week's question
In March 2025, in the thread "Re: OT, out", Umm asked the members: "Do you think it is because America is made up of magical soil that makes businesses based in America magically profitable?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

I'm curious what most people buy, if they are buying US government bonds. Nominals or TIPs?

Most of my fixed income is in nominal bonds, a bit in TIPs and some in 3 to 5 yr MYGAs.

Currently the 10 yr nominal is 5.11%. A 5 yr TIP is 2.64% + CPI.

The reported CPI over the last few years have been:

2024: 2.9%
2025: 2.6%
2026: estimation is 3.9%

I'm not a conspiracy person but I can guarantee my personal rate of inflation certainly exceeds those numbers by a good amount. Things like insurance, medical, cars/gas, food/restaurants, utilities all easily exceed those rates.

I'm guessing for 5 yrs the TIP might be the way to go.

Thanks
Rich
