The week's question
In December 2024, in the thread "Re: BRK: Why Not XOM?", BreckHutHigh asked the members: "What about the long road trips with kids?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

Her family of origin presents a window into authoritarian reality. Consider:

Her father, a real estate broker and evangelical theologian, died by suicide in 2020. Natalie and her mother reportedly tried to cover it up and moved to Florida for proximity to Trump. This prompted her brother Preston to run away from home and join the Sandinistas. Yes, you read that right. He was so disgusted by his mother and sister that he moved to Nicaragua and joined the Sandinista National Liberation Front. He is a socialist revolutionary who posts propaganda defending the Ortega-Murillo regime’s policies, like their recent decision to not have elections any more. Full commitment to the dictators they serve seems like a Harp family tradition.

But what about the rest of us who don’t fall into that stark dichotomy- of either running after the president’s golf cart with a printer in our backpack...... or heading off to Nicaragua to join the Sandinistas in order to sing the praises of a tin-pot left wing dictator?

Most of us, I would imagine, are left scratching our heads at such family dysfunction whose only commonality seems to be “worshipping an authoritarian dictator”.

But for those who share the dysfunction, it is nothing less than a justification to divide the world into good guys and bad guys.

Either we choose dictator Trump... or we are relegated to being slaves to commie dictators like Daniel Ortega.

There is no middle ground.

Their family story is nothing less than a tragedy, but as for the mindset that such an experience engenders??

Fuck that shit.
