The week's question
In December 2024, in the thread "Re: BRK: Why Not XOM?", BreckHutHigh asked the members: "What about the long road trips with kids?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

It's a popular view.
A dissenter might espouse the following alternative view: Google's AI overviews are really good, and they also do a fine job with deep follow up questions. Not the best AI in the world perhaps, but good enough for 95% of use cases when searching for answers to questions. Google search counts are rising, not falling, up maybe 12-13% in the last year

Interesting - it could also be a gradual process. Habits die hard, especially for us older folks who've used Google for everything for the largest part of our lives.

That could be a different story for Gen Z and Gen Alpha folks though who are growing up with both Google and "Chat" as they call it (ChatGPT) simultaneously.

One example in terms of generation differences that recently opened my eyes:

A relative's phone screen (a Gen Alpha) had an effect on that made all of the icons dark and almost impossible to read/see. I couldn't figure out why in the world they would ever want to do that, so I asked.

Turns out, they prefer to type/search for their apps rather than use home screen icons. So it's become a common thing for many Gen Alpha's to deliberately obscure all icons to make their app search bar prominent.
