Here's more of what Canada has been doing in the name of "Free trade": illegally importing cheap Chinese steel, packaging it as Canadian, and selling it in the US. This does 2 things:
1. Helps China evade US tariffs
2. Brands (often) crappy Chinese steel as (presumably better) Canadian steel
We have a "melt and pour" rule: Steel is supposed to be
melted and poured in North America for it to be considered native and thus subject to low duty rates. But what's been going on?
justice.gov - Canadian steel companies and owner pay 19m settle false claims act allegations relatingTwo Canada-based steel companies, Farjess Inc. and Royal Canadian Steel Inc., along with their part-owner and president, Feroz Jessani, have agreed to pay $19 million to resolve allegations that they violated the False Claims Act by knowingly and improperly failing to pay duties owed on flat-rolled steel that was manufactured in Europe and Asia.
...
The settlement resolves allegations that, from May 2019 through January 2025, Farjess Inc., Royal Canadian Steel Inc., and Feroz Jessani avoided duties owed to the United States by knowingly misrepresenting to CBP that the country of origin of certain flat-rolled steel was Canada or the United States, when in fact they knew the true country of origin was China, Indonesia, Italy, Turkey, or Vietnam.
The settlement resolves a civil lawsuit filed by Shamsh Dhala, a broker who worked with Farjess Inc., under the whistleblower provision of the False Claims Act, which permits private parties to file suit on behalf of the United States for false claims and to share in a portion of the government’s recovery. The more I hear "Elbows up" and the more I learn about Canadian trade practices in actuality, the more I want lift up my middle finger.
The other conclusion I'm reaching is that Carney and Co. just aren't very smart. Take the threat to "Cut the US off of Canadian oil". Uhhh:

Canadians are talking about “cutting off” the US from Canadian petroleum and natural gas
What they will end up doing is cutting Canada off from Alberta’s petroleum and natural gas...a fact that Alberta Premiere Danielle Smith reminded those morons of and more:
X (Twitter): Danielle Smith on X: "Less talk. More action. Cutting off Alberta energy would hurt Eastern Canadians long before it would trouble anyone else. We win this by bLess talk. More action.
Cutting off Alberta energy would hurt Eastern Canadians long before it would trouble anyone else.
We win this by being smarter. Back our workers, open new markets, drop our own provincial trade barriers and approve the west coast pipeline now.Sheesh. Even the newest American here Doug Ford is now saying, uhhhhh...
X (Twitter): Tablesalt 🇨🇦🇺🇸 on X: "JUST INI suppose Canada could build their own pipelines. But the provinces don't want them. I suppose they could use their own rail system to move oil but they don't have that much trackage.
