So how would a long term buy and hold shareholder have fared after inflation?

Good point. It's a pick-and-shovel business, just not a great one.

To bend over backwards being generous, one would have done fine for most intervals since 1990, as long as you skip 2015-2020 as cash flow tanked by 2/3, and the price along with it down to $15ish. In that sense, it's still a slow motion turnaround story, and who wants one of those? : )
