A simple question, should the US stay on the same path, or can it have major improvements?

That question is easy. If you pose it as a "should" question, there's no doubt that most Americans would be better off if we changed. The medical providers would take it in the neck, and it would be havoc for folks that rely on medical services from economically marginal institutions like rural and inner-city hospitals. But overall, the average American isn't in those groups, so they'd do well.

But if you phrase it as, "will the US stay on the same path" - rather than whether we should stay on the same path - the answer changes. We almost certainly will stay on the same path. Because our health care system is 18% of our GDP, not the 7.6% of GDP that Australia was allocating to health care in 1984. There's just far more inertia behind the current system. And since we don't have a parliamentary system, more veto points as well.
