As for "fact checking," Trump wouldn't know fact if it bit him on the butt.

I suspect that His Orangeness does recognize facts. It's that he consistently chooses to call them lies when they don't support his goals. He learned this lesson exceedingly well from the (eventually) disbarred attorney Roy Cohen. Cohen was widely known for his flagrant disdain for truth, for the law, and for paying his bills, and Trump chose him to be his attorney and mentor. So I think he is aware of the facts, but truth holds no moral weight, no value, for him. He is an amoral pragmatist. If the truth is useful to him.....then fine. But if it isn't....then he insists it's a lie.

It's seen as a populist strategy. And these populist politicians lead their unquestioning followers down their fabricated path.
