Here is an interesting alternative for those in California:

licenseplatewrap.com: License Plate Wrap

Front plates are required here, but a lot of drivers choose not to install one. Presumably, that is typically a result of cosmetic preference. This decal option is a way to be both legal and, well, less unfashionable than a normal plate would be. Aerodynamic drag might be a very tiny bit less as well.

This specific vendor is the only one that has been legally authorized to sell decal plates in California.
