I had a couple of personal experiences.
A very well known and popular guy at my company retired the same week I started. They whole division had a huge going away party in the cafeteria. Cake & soda and everything, for 1000+ people.
Two week later as I walked in, there was a note on the employee entrance door. He had a heart attack and died. Two weeks into retirement.
My Dad was several years older than my Mom, they both worked after us kids grew up and left home. He retired at the normal retirement age. He wanted her to quit so they could travel the country in their camper. She declined, wanted to stay a few more years to build up her retirement/pension credits.
He got cancer and died, before she retired.
Three. Three personal experiences.
I was on friendly terms with the lady that was the receptionist at the company's public entrance. Visited and chatted with her 2-3 times a week. Always on Friday just before the weekend.
One Monday I stopped by and there was a different lady. I asked "Where's Janet? I didn't think she was taking a vacation." "Oh, she died over the weekend. I heard it was a heart attack. I am the new receptionist."
Pilots have a saying of the three most worthless things to a pilot:
Runway behind you.
Altitude above you.
Gas sitting in the fuel truck.
For everybody: The years behind you.
